What is the S.O.A.P Method?
The SOAP Bible Study Method is a popular approach to studying the Bible. The acronym S.O.A.P stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It is a simple yet effective way to delve deeper into the Word of God and to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning to our lives. We recommended to spend at least 15 to 30 minutes each day in the Word while using this method.
Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer
Scripture
The first step is Scripture, this involves selecting a passage from the Bible and reading it carefully, multiple times if necessary, to fully understand its meaning.
Observation
The next step is Observation, which involves taking notes on what you notice about the passage, such as its context, what it means to you, and any key words that stand out to you. While filling out this section here are some questions you can ask yourself:
- What context is it written in?
- What is the overall message?
- Do any words stand out to you?
- What is God trying to tell you in this passage?
- Is a lesson being taught
- Are there any instructions to obey?
Application
Then next is Application, reflect on how the passage applies to your own life and circumstances. This may involve identifying areas where you need to grow or change, and seeking guidance and wisdom from the Holy Spirit.
- What areas of my life can this verse influence?
- How does this scripture apply to my life?
- Are there any habits or attributes I need to change to align myself with the Word?
Prayer
Finally, the last step is Prayer, use this verse as a guide to spend time in prayer. Ask God for His guidance, wisdom and understanding as you seek to apply the teachings of His Word to your life.
Overall, the SOAP Bible Study Method is a powerful tool for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the Bible and grow in their faith. By following these simple steps, you can gain valuable insights into God’s Word and apply its teachings to your daily life in a meaningful way.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. – Matthew 7:7-8
