In recent years, parenting has become challenging thanks to the rise of things that often seem at odds with Christian values. Secular values dominate the world and the task of instilling godly principles has become not just a responsibility but a vital calling for parents. Even so, we must raise our children in the ways of God.
The Bible in Proverbs 29:15 says, “A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother.”
It is the responsibility of the mother to ensure her children grow up in the ways of God. Society will always blame us if we don’t raise them up the right way. This is why we must strive against all odds and bring up godly children. Furthermore, Proverbs 22:6 says;
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
If you are wondering how you can raise godly children in a secular world, then read on. Here’s how we can do that:
We Must Teach Our Children the Word of God
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
The Bible encourages us to regularly impress God’s commands upon our children. We are called to make them learn and understand the significance of obeying God’s Word. As mothers, we must hold conversations and discussions with our children about the relevance of God’s Word in everyday life. This way, we set a firm foundation in their early stages of life and we help them understand the bedrock of their faith.
Pray for and with Our Children
Prayer is a powerful force in the life of any Christian family. Through prayer, we can seek God’s guidance and wisdom in raising our children. We can also teach our children how to pray and establish a pattern of relying on God’s power and grace in times of distress. Let our children know that there is a Father in heaven whom they can turn to both in good and bad times. Give your children an opportunity to pray before a meal, to thank God, to pray before going to bed and after waking up in the morning.
Lead by Example
Inasmuch as the world we live in today is a rotten world, what we do in the presence of our children matters a lot in their upbringing. Our children are keen observers of our actions, attitudes, and words. If we want them to grow up with godly principles in this secular world, let them learn these principles from us.
Titus 2:7-8 says, “Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”
Raising godly children in a secular world is not an easy task. But as we strive to achieve this, we must remember that we are not alone. God is with us in this and we can always seek His guidance when we feel like we are not getting it right.
